We are almost one year into our journey as a church, and we know that we would be nowhere without people who have chosen to make the180 their home. As a way to reflect on this past year, we are featuring several individuals and families who joined us along the way. By serving and gathering with us, these people have truly made the180 special and help us look forward to our ongoing journey of learning and growing in Quebec. Martin and Marjorie

chemist and accountant

 Deux-Montagnes

What stage are you at in life?

We have two girls, 16 and 18, and have been married 22 years. Martin works full-time at the University of Montreal, and Marjorie has recently been on a rest year but is actively seeking new work as an accountant. We met in Montreal at a church. Marjorie moved here when she was about 24 years old from Western Canada; she grew up in a Christian environment but as a young person she heard about revivals in Quebec. It was unusual to hear of people coming to God as adults and she was interested in French and French culture and so she made her home here as a young adult. Martin was born in Ottawa but moved to Montreal at a young age. As someone with a scientific mind and born into a Catholic family, Martin has had a long journey with faith. Through experiences in a Bible study group and at a summer camp, he learned that it was safe to ask questions and to trust God.

How long have you been attending the180 and how have you been involved?

We began attending the180 in October of last year through the invitation of friends and soon decided to make the180 our home. During this past year Martin has been involved with some handyman projects at the church and Marjorie looks forward to volunteering with the180 Kids this coming year. Our daughter Coralie is often away at school, but Katya has been involved with the180 Youth over this past year on a regular basis. We have also made space in our schedules to be a part of weekly Home Groups and we are very excited for that!

How is the180 helping you discover God in a new way?

Together we are learning how much it is a privilege to be received by God Himself - it is amazing that God desires to connect with us and help us grow. We love the180 because we feel it is a community that seeks to love and honour Jesus. As we mentioned, in the coming year we have made space in our schedules to be part of a Home Group and we look forward to being refreshed through others as well as being an encouragement to others.

One of the things that has also come through for us in different sermons is the idea that God is not there to serve us! In fact, when we pray for things, God will bring our will in line with His and not just give us what we want. We love that although the180 seeks to be accessible to people who don’t yet know God, it not through preaching an easy way. The teaching is simple - but not easy!

This is our final interview as we count down to our one year anniversary celebration! Hope to celebrate with you on Sunday!

Matt and Cynthia

airline station attendant and part-time student/part-time sales associate

 Laval

What stage are you at in life?

Matt is finished school and works full-time with Air Canada while Cynthia pursues a Bachelors of Psychology at the University of Montreal while working part-time as a sales associate.

How long have you been attending the180 and how have you been involved?

We both started attending the180 shortly after it launched. Matt helped with host team when it first started and continues to helps with cleaning and parking at special events as his schedule permits. Cynthia has also served on the host team.

How is the180 helping you discover God in a new way?

For both of us, the180 has opened us up to new ideas and a different way of living.

For Matt, the180 has helped give me a better understanding of what it means to serve God. Having grown up in church my whole life, I thought I had all the answers but the180 and Pastor Dom have made me re-examine how I view things in and out of church.

For Cynthia, the180 is helping me discover God in a way I didn’t even know He existed. I feel like I am meeting Him for the first time again. At the180, God has reminded me of something I had long forgotten: that His love for me is unconditional. My past experience with the Christian church hasn’t always been great. For a long time, my heart was heavy and I thought I had to reach a certain level of “holiness” for God to bless me, use me and love me. God has worked in my mind and heart in a tremendous way ever since I started attending the180. This is where God started paving a way for me in this challenging season I am currently in. For a start, I know now more than ever that God loves me and that there is nothing I could ever do for Him to love me more. I still have so much to learn and my battles aren’t over but knowing that I am the daughter of a King who holds the victory comforts me and gives me the strength to go through it all with a heart full of faith.

Adriano and Gina

accountant & teacher

 Lasalle

What stage are you both at in life?

With both of our children in high school and both being employed full-time, we are at a very busy stage in life! As parents of teen-aged children who don’t yet hold licenses, we also spend a fair amount of time on the road, driving them to where they need to be.

How long have you been attending the180 and how have you been involved?

Our first encounter with the180 was at its official launch party last year in September. We came at the invitation of a cousin who was already a part of the church. Our kids discovered the youth table and quickly wanted to sign up. In fact, we would say that it was our kids who brought us to church – their excitement to be involved with the180 youth and their love for their peers in this community exposed us to the180 and now we call the180 home.

Despite living far from the church we have found ways to be involved – as an art teacher, Gina has led a crafts afternoon and helped paint a mural in the180 families area and Adriano has lent a hand to help clean our space and also flip burgers at special events.

How is the180 helping you discover God in a new way?

Dom’s approach to teaching (rather than preaching) and his engaging style have been an important part of our journey at the180. We’ve learned that the point is to be open to growing, and we’ve learned to come as we are. We love the180’s philosophy on it being okay to ask questions, and we love the church’s stance on showing compassion to all Christians whatever their journey, especially given Quebec’s historical religious context.

The180 has truly transformed our understanding of the idea of “being a Christian.” We no longer understand faith as something that is once-and-for-all, but moreso as a process of growing and learning. The environment at the180 has been extremely welcoming and allowed us to be vulnerable in this journey.

 Lorraine

What stage are you both at in life?

We are enjoying our adult children, their spouses and our grandchild. We value and enjoy walking with others in their faith journey. Jean serves as the dean of École de théologie évangélique du Québec (ETEQ), a theological school partnership between the Christian and Missionary Alliance and the Mennonite Brethren while Elizabeth works half-time as a Licensed Practical Nurse and pursues a Master's of Theology at ETEQ.

How long have you been attending the180 and how have you been involved?

We have been a part of the180 since November 2015. Jean serves on the Advisory Board, as well as hosting on Sunday mornings along with Elizabeth. Together we host and facilitate a weekly Home Group.

How is the180 helping you discover God in a new way?

Our faith and trust in God is renewed by the very applicable teaching and the welcoming culture of the180, which helps everyone feel accepted as they journey in their relationship with God.  We find joy in relating to and serving alongside others at the 180.

Lucas

3rd year university student, part-time pizza maker

Laval

What stage are you at in life?

I am 21 years old and am currently studying at McGill University in the Physical Education and Health program. I also balance a part time job at a pizza shop and a relationship with my lovely girlfriend of 4 years.

How long have you been attending the180 and how have you been involved?

I have been at the180 since even before its official launch, when we were only meeting every other week. It’s really amazing how far we’ve come since then! The180 has provided me with many new opportunities to learn. One of the first things I got involved with was the Slides Team, and I then decided to join the180 Kids Team as well. I have also been working closely with the180 Youth. This has given me the chance to interact with other youth leaders and to develop new relationships with teenagers who attend the church. I was also given the opportunity to do an internship at the church this past summer, which allowed me to grow in so many ways as I provided support to our youth and families by hanging out with kids and organizing events. Working with the kids and youth group at the 180 has confirmed for me that working with children and being a teacher is something that I want to do for the rest of my life.

How is the180 helping you discover God in a new way?

One of the ways the 180 is helping me discover God in a new way is the idea of serving. God has made each of us unique and has given us all our own special gifts. The 180 has been a place that has allowed me to find and use my gifts to serve others and God. We have many teams where individuals use their gifts to serve others and the church. It is amazing seeing so many people come together to serve and volunteer for one common goal.

What stage are you at in life?

We are currently raising our three children - ages 14, 4, and 2 - while both working full-time, which definitely makes for a busy lifestyle.

How long have you been attending the180 and how have you been involved?

We began attending the180 during the first week of October last year - and we would describe the way that we ended up here as miraculous. After attending a couples seminar we mutually decided to find a church where we could be committed as family and we believe that God honoured this desire - we actually discovered the180 through an Instagram search! We decided to check it out and loved it. We experienced a special kind of welcome, loved the ambiance, and felt like it was our home right away. Since then we have been part of a Home Group and our older daughter has become part of the180 Youth as well as serving as a teacher’s helper with the180 Kids. Wil lends his technical skill to the sound team and on the drums for worship, and Michelle loves serving with the180 Kids on Sunday mornings.

How is the180 helping you discover God in a new way?

For most of our lives it felt like living a Christian life was more imposed than by choice. At the180 we have found a different way to see life. We don’t feel like our behaviour is being watched, but that we are journeying with our people for who we are - human beings with struggles and weaknesses. The180 is a place where we genuinely want to be. We’ve made wonderful friends and we just love being here.

the180 on Mission: Joanna's Journey of Gratitude

Joanna has been part of the180 since the beginning. She served on the worship team weekly and now is on a 7-month trip (which started in October) to travel, serve and learn to trust God in new ways. Below you'll find some thoughts about her recent time in Bali and also a bit about an exciting opportunity to serve with a Christian & Missionary Alliance ministry called Envision.
